compiled April 30, 2009 from draft version hg:e0660c153c0b:79 An acyclic coloring of a graph is a proper vertex coloring such that the subgraph induced by the union of any two color classes is a disjoint collection of trees. The more restricted notion of star coloring requires that the union of any two color classes induces a disjoint collection of stars. The acyclic and star chromatic numbers of a graph G are defined analogously to the chromatic number χ(G) and are denoted by χa(G) and χs(G), respectively. In this paper, we consider acyclic and star colorings of graphs that are decomposable with respect to the join operation, which builds a new graph from a collection of two or more disjoint graphs by adding all possible edges between them. In particular, we present a recursive formula for the acyclic chromatic number of joins of graphs and show that a similar formula holds for the star chromatic number. We also demonstrate the algorithmic implications of our results for the cographs, which have the unique property that they are recursively decomposable with respect to the join and disjoint union operations.

Acyclic and Star Colorings of Cographs

An acyclic coloring of a graph is a proper vertex coloring such that the union of any two color classes induces a disjoint collection of trees. The more restricted notion of star coloring requires that the union of any two color classes induces a disjoint collection of stars. We prove that every acyclic coloring of a cograph is also a star coloring and give a linear-time algorithm for finding a...

Coloring with no 2-Colored P4's

A proper coloring of the vertices of a graph is called a star coloring if every two color classes induce a star forest. Star colorings are a strengthening of acyclic colorings, i.e., proper colorings in which every two color classes induce a forest. We show that every acyclic k-coloring can be refined to a star coloring with at most (2k2 − k) colors. Similarly, we prove that planar graphs have ...

Restricted coloring problems

In this paper, we obtain polynomial time algorithms to determine the acyclic chromatic number, the star chromatic number and the harmonious chromatic number of P4-tidy graphs and (q, q − 4)-graphs, for every fixed q. These classes include cographs, P4-sparse and P4-lite graphs. We also obtain a polynomial time algorithm to determine the Grundy number of (q, q − 4)-graphs. All these coloring pro...

Restricted Coloring Problems and Forbidden Induced Subgraphs

An acyclic coloring of a graph is a proper coloring such that any two color classes induce a forest. A star coloring of a graph is an acyclic coloring with the further restriction that the forest induced by any two color classes is a disjoint collection of stars. We consider the behavior of these problems when restricted to certain classes of graphs. In particular, we give characterizations of ...

Acyclic Colorings and Triangulations of Weakly Chordal Graphs

An acyclic coloring of a graph is a proper vertex coloring without bichromatic cycles. We show that the acyclic colorings of any weakly chordal graph G correspond to the proper colorings of triangulations of G. As a consequence, we obtain polynomial-time algorithms for the acyclic coloring problem and the perfect phylogeny problem on the class of weakly chordal graphs. Our results also imply li...
